Historic values of St Petersburg Catherine Palace with Amber Room tour

Catherine Palace, about 20 km from the city, was one of the royal summer residences. Come to this luxurious place which was called “the jewellery piece” by contemporaries who saw it for the first time. Elizabeth, Peter the Great’s daughter, loved luxury and always tried to get the best. Her palace will try to overwhelm you with wealth and elegance. Elizabeth loved balls and masquerades. Find out more about the 18 century dances in the largest hall of the palace – Grand Hall. Imagine coming to a ball there dressed in the traditional XVIII century clothes. The ballroom is the biggest hall in all palaces outside of Saint Petersburg. Learn why the place in nicknamed the light gallery.

Try to guess which doors are real ones and which are only mirrors that reflect candle light and make the space look larger. Look at your own reflection in the endless gallery but be careful: they say if you look too long, you may see your future there. The unique baroque style palace was restored after WW II, which is a real miracle.

The main historic and art treasure of the palace is the world famous Amber Room .In 1716, Peter the Great presented 248 personal guards to the Prussian king, Friedrich Wilhelm I, and in return received beautiful panels оf Persian Amber.

In 1755 Italian architect Rastrelli, favourite of Peter’s daughter Elizabeth, built the Amber Room using the panels, but unfortunately, during WWII the Nazis made off with them and they disappeared. Russian craftsmen worked for 24 years to reconstruct the room (basing on white- and- black photos) with over 500 000 amber pieces ( 6 tons) from Kaliningrad Amber ; it cost Russian Government $11 000 000.  The restored room was opened for the public on May 31st, 2003, during St Petersburg 300th anniversary festivities. The excellence and titanic work of restores inspired German musician  P.Schultse to compose “St Petersburg Amber March “ glorifying the spirit of creativity and beauty over demons of ruining and barbarism…

After the tour of the palace stroll along the alleys that the Russian Tsars used to walk along, enjoy small pavilions in the park; get a chance to take pictures from the top of the Cameron gallery.
